It looks like a lot of aftermarket seat manufacturers recommend removing the airbag if you install their seats. Is this just a liability thing for them, or is there are you actually safer removing the airbag with an aftermarket seat?

Thoughts?

I would assume liability because they can’t vouch for what the airbag will do to you in the modified seating position. Can’t imagine it would be any more  dangerous than an airbag would be to someone who has a drastically different seating position due to height. Airbags are great and I’m no safety Luddite but they are overrated in cars before 2010 imo

It isn’t that your safer, but airbags (I would think) are calibrated for the OEM seat’s range of motion.

If you put in a low racing seat and the airbag goes off, it is going to blow your face off.

Airbags can really hurt when used in the wrong vector.

That sounds about right.

The airbag module in my equinox is in the radiator core support. I had to replace it. Was like $90, but after driving around for a few months with the airbag light on, I decided I’d rather bite the pillow than the steering wheel.

Easy fix though.

I have a lower, fixed racing seat, but use the stock belt on the street, so airbag stays connected. But with my height in a Miata, the seat actually puts me at an appropriate height. If your running a harness on the street (don't do that), then no airbag.

Something else not mentioned is adaptive bags that use a seat sensor to determine size of occupant when calculating bag deployment.  Can't transfer the sensor to an aftermarket seat (AFAIK).
